Let's get the truth out there immediately: Sony has lost a lot of ground on the television market since the introduction of HDTV. The image quality of their televisions have been really mediocre. In fact, DLP televisions have blown Sony rear projection LCDs out of the water. Companies like Samsung and Toshiba are now the leaders in the category.

In light of those problems, Sony recently introduced the Grand Wega SXRD Rear Projection HDTV, a television with an incredible picture quality. There is one thing that makes the colors on this television pop: SXRD technology. Basically, three Silicon X-tal Reflectived Display panels (each associated with a primary color) combine to create an almost perfect life-like image. It helps that the TV is capable of displaying resolutions of up to 1080p, a step above other HDTV sets that only display 720p. The television is not cheap, the MSRP is $3,499 (50 inch set), but as you know by now, you can find them cheaper at your local electronics store.

Is the television worth it? We think so, but you might want to hold-up until the price drops. Besides, there are very limited input devices (things like DVD player) that can take advantage of what this TV has to offer: a true 1080p digital signal. Currently, only some local cable companies and satalite providers allow this high-resolution picture quality. In the near future however, we will be able to view movies at 1080p via Blue-Ray DVD players.
