Microsoft's Surface 'Milan' taking us to the future of computing
Microsoft has just developed a nifty table... Yeah I know what you are thinking. What's so great about a table, and why would Microsoft do such a thing? Well it turns out Microsoft is revolutionizing the way we interact with our PC's. Sit back and imagine a 30-inch touch screen monitor... Now imagine that same monitor flat on its back. There you go, you just imagined yourself Microsoft's Surface..

So what exactly is Surface? Surface code named 'Milan' is an interactive computer that uses your fingers as its form of input. Thats right no more mouse or keyboard to mess with. This ?surface computer? as Microsoft calls it is loaded with some of the craziest features we have seen yet. Imagine a PC that can see.. Thats right you read correctly. The Microsoft Surface can actually see, no not like a human can see, but it can see objects that are placed on the table, or better said Surface. So why does a table need to see you might ask. Here's where this table gets cool. The table has optical sensors behind the 30-inch projection screen that can recognize objects such as cups, credit cards, phones etc... It's object recognition has to be one of its coolest features, just picture putting your camera and cell phone on the table, and you being able to drag images from one to the other without connecting any cables. How about transferring your contacts from the PC over to your phone. The limits seem endless with a device of this nature. The Surface measures 22 inches high, 21 inches deep and 42 inches wide. It runs on Microsoft Windows Vista and has 10/100 Ethernet as well as wireless 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0.

The Surface is already a jump skip and a hop away from being used at Harrah's Entertainment's Las Vegas properties. These properties include Caesars Palace and the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Guests will be able to make dining plans, get show tickets, and keep well informed as to what's going on at all times throughout the day. The Surface will have a virtual concierge to show guests around the hotels and casinos. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. will also be among the few to launch Surface. It will day view at Sheraton Hotels & Resorts initially to be used as a tool for guests to play their favorite music hits, view or send pictures to friends and loved ones, or even order some grub by merely dropping their credit card or guest key card on the table. Finally T-Mobile retail stores will also use Surface?s interactive features to compare cell phones and plans by just placing the devices on the table.

Since the Surface is the first of its kind you can expect it to have a hefty price tag. It is anywhere between $5000 and $10,000 and is set to be out by the end of 2007.
